Damn Special Hardware

A couple of years ago I washed one of my chromebooks - a Toshiba CB30 B 104 - and installed Linux on it. Been a few different distributions on it since but always only Linux.

For the past few years I’ve tried to move over more to bsd. Mainly OpenBSD since I like the thought behind it, the minimalism of it and the simplicity of it. Been struggling a lot to get it onto the chromebook but it just doesn’t work. Tried both OpenBSD, FreeBSD and NetBSD with no luck. The installer simply fails to boot.

I hate that companies lock down their hardware more and more. Apple makes it hard as hell to put anything other than OS X on ‘em. Google tries to keep chromebooks locked down via hardware so you actually have to solder to make it possible to install another system. Even other companies try to keep their hardware locked.

If I buy something I wanna f**ng OWN IT! Not “rent” it.
